Can the BMS finally deliver?
www.smartbuildingsmagazine.com/features/can-the-bms-finally-deliver This article gives great insight to what building systems could hold for us all in the future. This article depicts a more utopian view point of the benefits of building wide system and IoT integration on common communication platforms. There is no denying the benefits that this could offer and the UK government is starting to drive more toward this the development of the next levels of BIM. However, if we go down this road then we need to do so with eyes wide open. Such levels of common communication platform can become very hard to defend. More and more automated systems are being targeted by hackers and ‘bots’ with intentions toward either finding a backdoor to more sensitive areas of the incumbent IT or instigating a DOPS (Denial Of Physical Service) attack to disrupt building usage. The article talks of removing Gateways to simplify inter-system communication, but the Gateways can actually act like entry level firewalls for automated systems and prevent anyone of anything getting to systems they should not. Have a look at the UK Government PETRAS Research Group (www.petrashub.org) to gain further insight into this.

Controls and Services in Sync.
http://www.modbs.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/16551/Controls_and_services_in_sync..html Every building manager should read this article to make the most of how they operate their buildings, improve performance and maximise on energy efficiencies. The automated systems that manage buildings, control the internal environment and handle energy usage have to be configured to work at their optimum to maximise the benefit they can provide. This means keeping these systems in tune with how you are using and operating your building.

Seasonal advice from Cube Controls
I am sure everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and New Year break and are now settling back into work, all fighting fit and raring to go! Don’t forget that your buildings and their systems did not stop operating during this time and that problems may have occured and been missed in your absence. After the festive period, especially as the external temperatures have fallen, go to your BMS and check the alarm logs and overview pages and look for potential problems. Pay particular attention to your external temperature (outside air) sensor and make sure you are happy that it is reading accurately. Not only does this sensor govern the effectiveness of your heating systems it also protects dormant systems such as Chillers and protects them from freezing.

Cube maintain hybrid system at prestigious Mayfair building.
We are delighted to be working with Sowga to deliver the service and maintenance of the BMS installation at the newly completed 7 Clarges Street building. The installed building management controls and energy package are a hybrid design consisting of three primary control system elements: Distech, Tridium-Jace and Delta. This approach provides full building integration of the HVAC, including the packaged air handling and fan coil units. Our experience in working with these different system elements and the data communication platforms, used to link them together, allows us to support this system in it’s entirety.

Cube utilise the latest Priva Blue-ID controls equipment and Comforte CX terminal unit controllers to bring an ageing building fully up to date.
Priva was chosen as the ideal system to implement the essential control system upgrade within extremely tight time constraints on this project. With the short delivery times and speedy commissioning offered by this system, Priva Blue-ID was the only choice. An ageing Trend BMS system was replaced with the Blue-ID controller platform and the 4 floors of stand alone fan coil units were converted to full BMS control. A Touchpoint colour touch screen provided the client with the required user interface requirements with access to all system settings and historic data logging.
